Chapter 6

Everyone was silent. Emma scanned the faces of the crowd. While some averted their gazes, Annie captivated others.

“The chocolate,” Emma said, holding the half-eaten bit. That made little sense. Where did Annie get the chocolate from?

“What are you talking about, Emma?” Rebecca asked, engaged in the situation. She pulled out her small notebook and frantically scribbled, documenting everything that she observed.

Emma said, “I think it was the chocolate.”

“What do you mean, the chocolate?” Monica chirped. “I’ve been eating chocolate all day.” She dropped the few pieces that were in her hand. “Oh, Marc, does this mean I’m going to be next?” She turned to her husband, her eyes blurry with tears.

“Monica, no…” Emma did not want to continue, but she wanted to assure the woman that she would not be the next one to go. But Emma didn’t know what was happening. This was all supposed to be an innocent chocolate workshop for Valentine’s Day, where couples would come together and share their love and do something fun. Now it was turning into a nightmare.

Monica left the small circle around Annie and paced by the windows. Back and forth. Marc headed over to see if he could calm her.

Emma, trying to ignore the couple that was now arguing about why they had to come to the chocolate workshop, turned back to Rebecca’s question. “I don’t know, but this… this isn’t my chocolate. I remember every piece that I’ve made.”

“So then, whose chocolate is it?” Luke was the one that spoke out this time. He became engaged in the situation, maybe too much for a woman that he’d met that day. Emma wondered if there was more to the situation, as his face had a distraught expression.

“You know, this is your fault,” Tori said.

With a gentle nod, Peggy and Forrest showed their quiet approval. “If we didn’t have this workshop, then we wouldn’t be stuck here. And then we wouldn’t have a dead body in the room with us. Can you believe it? This is a total nightmare. Luke, I want out of here now,” Tori grumbled and walked away with a spring to her step.

“It’s not your fault,” Luna whispered to Emma and grabbed her arm, pulling her in for a hug. When someone’s grieving, you do the best that you can. Embracing Luna, Emma stared over her shoulder at Annie. She couldn’t get past what had happened.

Clouds moved across the sky, darkening the room as the sun no longer shone through the tall glass windows. Oliver left the group and made his way over to his table, where his jacket was on the back seat. He grabbed his jacket, which was a gray puffer fleece that would keep someone warm in the windy, cool temperatures of the Pacific Northwest, especially in February. As he pulled off his jacket, a black brick fell onto the floor with a thump. He stared down at the glossy screen of none other than Emma’s phone.

“Hey, is that what I think it is?”
